A Corpus-based Study On E-C Translation Of Metaphors In Travel News From The Perspective Of Theory Of Lexical Concepts And Cognitive Models

International tourism is flourishing.To further tap into the international tourist market,a great quantity of English travel news has been introduced and translated.However,metaphors,particularly deliberate metaphors abound therein impose no small challenge on translation.In addition,proper translation of metaphors will directly affect the readability of translated travel news and the reading experience of readers.Given that,the thesis studies the translation of metaphors in English travel news at the lexical level and cognitive level based on the Travel News Trans-editing Project of Huanqiu.com and supported by the Theory of Lexical Concepts and Cognitive Models(LCCM Theory).To achieve the research objectives,this thesiscombines the quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis.First,it adopts a corpus-based approach to build a small-sized English travel news corpus and utilizes corpus concordance software AntCont to conduct a fuzzy search.Subsequently,Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit(MIPVU)is employed for a comprehensive and objective identification of metaphors in English travel news based on the search results.In light of Deliberate Metaphor Theory(DMT),metaphors identified are categorized into deliberate and non-deliberate metaphors.Therefore,the focus of the following translation discussion is shifted to deliberate metaphors.Based on the feature analysis of deliberate metaphors and analysis of equivalent relationships between English and Chinese deliberate metaphors at the lexical level and cognitive level,this thesis conducts a number of translation case studies and then concludes four translation techniques guided by foreignizing and domesticating strategies,including retaining the metaphorical image,retaining the metaphorical image plus its implications,substituting the metaphorical image and rephrasing the metaphorical image.Guided by LCCM Theory,this thesis studies metaphor translation in English travel news at the lexical level and cognitive level and further puts the study emphasis on deliberate metaphors,of which the theoretical perspective and research object are comparably new.Additionally,the translation techniques concluded herein could provide future participants of the project with some practical guidance and help them tackle the problems encountered during metaphor translation.
