A Report On The Translation Of Understanding Police Culture(Chapter 14)

This is a translation report on Chapter14 Angels and Assholes:The Construction of Police Morality taken from the book Understanding Police Culture.The book explains where police culture stems from as well as its manifestation.It offers a comprehensive and unique perspective for readers to understand the police and their culture.The 14~thh chapter(the source text)elaborates the construction of police morality under the theme of solidarity and its significance,and then discusses about the interpretation by relevant scholars on police morality.This report is divided into four parts.Part one introduces the project including its background,significance and the layout of this report.Part two analyzes the contents and features of the source text.Part three describes the preparation for translation,discusses the difficulties in translation and puts forward solutions on the basis of Skopos Theory by Hans J.Vermeer.Faced with unique English sentence patterns as well as long and complex sentences,the translator adopted division,conversion,transfer of voice,shifting,omission and amplification to make the translation readable,understandable and in line with Chinese ways of expression.Part four concludes the project,and puts forward the problems to be solved.
