This is the report on the Chinese translation of The Marburg Sisters by Andrea Barrett who is an American novelist and short story writer. The Marburg Sisters is extracted from one of her famous collections Ship Fever which won the 1996 U.S.National Book Award for Fiction. In this short story, dialogue is frequently used, therefore, the words and the sentences are simple and brief which are easy to understand. In terms of this, colloquialism which is an informal word or expression that is more suitable to use in speech than in writing may be the most obvious linguistic feature. The reasons why the translator chose this short story as the translation material are that,on one hand, the logic of this short story is very clear and is easy to comprehend,on the other hand,it reflects a kind of relationship between parents and children which is very normal in American society of that times. This report mainly consists of six parts. The first part illustrates the background of the report. In the second part, the report gives a brief introduction to the short novel including the general idea, the personal profile of the author and the linguistic features of the short story. In the third part, this report mainly describes what the translator should do in the process of the translation. In the fourth part, the report demonstrates some ways such as doing some preparations and proofreading to control the quality of the translation and the schedule of the translation project. In the fifth part, the report chiefly presents some problems, for instance, how to deal with a word in a sentence or how to cope with attributive clauses or passive voice, that the translator has met during the translation and the strategies such as words conversion, words addition and omission, sentence division, sentence inversion, the translator has taken to fix these problems by analyzing some examples extracted from the short story. The last part summarizes the translation report and some limitations and suggestions are provided for further studies.
