| Hu Shi, as the pioneer of New Cultural Movement, is a famous writer, historian as well as a translator. The eight proposals he put forward the for literary reform in his article Preliminary Proposals for Literary Reform marks the beginning of the Literary Revolution and achieve sensational effects on Chinese people. He devotes his life in promoting the New Cultural Movement and becomes one of the main prominent figures in that period. As one hugely important figure in the Chinese academic circle, his poems, translation of short stories and writing in Baihua has to a large degree pushed forward the development of New Cultural Movement.As a translator, Hu has made different kinds of choices in his translation, which are embodied in the choices of the genres, the nations and the authors of the original texts. And he has also made concrete choices of domestication or foreignization in his dealing with the texts to be translated. However, these choices are not only determined by his personal characteristic but also by the purposes of his translation, which are determined by the historical, social, cultural and political factors. The translation of short stories by Hu Shi has two obvious purposes: One is to enlighten the people and the other is to create a literature alive and innovation of the Chinese literature. The translation of short stories accounts for an important part of his literary activity. However, his translation of short stories draws little attention now. This paper, on the basis of Skopos theory, tries to make a descriptive study of his translation of short stories, ranging from his choice of the texts to the specific translation strategies. Hu's purposes in translating were determined by many factors. Since he make his choice of the original texts and translation strategies correspondent to his purposes, his translation of short stories has achieved success.
