As an important and alternative existence in the history of literature, the fantasy novel never deviates from the view of the scholars and the public. In recent years, with the catalysis of similar movies and TV series, its attention has been increasing year by year. The Lord of the Rings is a classic novel of modern fantasy, and the “secondary world” created by Tolkien has become a model for later generations, such as Harry Potter and so on.Coincidentally, almost at the same time, the same kind of novels called Shushan Knight-errant Swordsmen Biography and Jade Dynasty appeared in China.Because of their limited influence, the latter mainly spread in China. From the perspective of the creation background and the storyline, there is a strong comparability between Chinese and British fantasy novels, which gives insight into the richness of the human spiritual world.Based on the five works of Chinese and British modern fantasy as the main research models, with “secondary world” as the center, the thesis expands on aesthetic comparison of Chinese and British fantasy novels. The thesis holds that there is a different aesthetic style in the secondary world of the Chinese and British modern fantasy. In the Chinese fantasy novels, the secondary world is is based on spells, theanthropic and incompatibility of justice and evil, which is the utilitarian world interweaving each other with the real world. While in the British fantasy novels, the secondary world is based on magic,God-man separation and good-versus-evil,which is an ideal world separated from real world. In the construction of aesthetic space, the Chinese fantasy novels are based on the plot of a mortal's journey to cultivate immortality and the theme of pursuit of earthly happiness. While British fantasy novels are expanded by heroic adventures, saving the world, suffering and atonement. There is difference between the secondary world written by Chinese and British writers, but existing the same aesthetic significance, which builds the spiritual home of human beings in the world of literature. The difference between them, not only results from the difference between Chinese and British national aesthetic consciousness, such as the former expressing for the world view of “harmony between man and nature” and collectivism orientation, while the latter reflecting the world outlook of opposites between man and nature, the tendency of individualism. But also it is closely related to the long literary tradition of the two countries, showing the distinction between the outlaw hero and knight literature tradition. The article is divided into four parts, the introduction part introduces research background, literature review, research method, text selection and concept definition. In the first chapter, from the perspectives of fantasy elements, aesthetic attributes and relations with the real world, this paper dissects the aesthetic form of “secondary world” in Chinese and British modern fantasy novels. The second chapter analyzes the space construction of “secondary world” from four aspects: narrative theme, characterization, plot and creation mode. The third chapter analyzes the reasons of similarities and differences of the “secondary world” from the three aspects of faith tradition, literary tradition and aesthetic tradition.
