With the hit fantasy film "Harry Potter" at the beginning of21st century, the fantasy novel is very popular in China. J.R.R.Tolkien, the author of the "Lord of the Rings" which is the foundational fantasy novel, put forward a very important concept——"Secondary World" which has close relation with the construction of the fantasy world. By compiling and filtering the studies on fantasy literature both at home and abroad, this thesis starts the discourse upon the significance of the " Secondary World "Firstly, the thesis summaries three remarkable features of the " Secondary World"——magic and witchcraft, intersubjectivity equal exchange, trip of the hero to conquer impractical world, and provides in—depth interpretation.At the second part, much emphasis is placed on the aesthetic characteristics of the "Secondary World" from the art features and mental aesthetic speculation two aspects. Art features include creating image by the feature and making the image true, thrilling and peculiar aesthetic narrative strategy and distinctive hypertext characteristic. There are two parts of the mental aesthetic speculation, one part is the novel world provides an unlimited imagine world to people, the other is the fantasy world not only brings carnival fun but also poetic regression.The thesis will reveal the meaning of the "Secondary World" to human being at the last part. Firstly carnival fun is not limited in the fantasy novels, but in the reality is also in the shadow of the fantasy culture, which is the refraction of people’s fantasy psychological. Secondly, with the development of the modern civilization there’s something wrong with our soul and we are in need of redemption. And the last, the " Secondary World" also makes some advice to human on how to deal with the relation between people and nature,and the interrelation of people.
