As a vital research category of linguistic culturology,"concept" is deemed as the carrier of a nation's culture and minds,the mirror of unique spirits and temperament of a particular nation.Analysis of a particular concept allows people to better understand the inner world of natives who own that concept.As one of the basic concepts in Russian culture,the concept "children" is an important part of the Russian value system.But little was conducted to explore it from the perspective of linguistic culturology,which renders the study necessary.Within the framework of concept theory in the field of linguistic culturology,the connotation of the concept "children" is explained by the study through the analysis of the data in three levels,i.e.,words,sentences,and discourse.More specifically,the study explores the semantic and cultural connotation of that concept,and unveils the characteristics of the Russian nation that are reflected thereby.Furthermore,the study discusses salient features of "children" in specific times by referring to the background of times presented in the discourse.This thesis consists of introduction,three chapters,conclusion and references.The introduction reveals the overseas and domestic research status,the purpose,methodology,structure of this study,etc.Chapter one is the elaboration part of the theoretical basis in this research,which includes a brief introduction of the the linguistic culturology,the concept theory,the structure of concept and the methodology of conceptual analysis.In chapter two,the concept "children" in Russian and Russian culture is disclosed at the lexical level by analyzing the diachronic etymology and synchronic semantics of the word "children" and constructing the nominative field of this concept,and meanwhile at the sentential level by analyzing Russian proverbs,sayings and aphorisms associated with this concept.At the discourse level,chapter three examines the concept "children" in Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev and Medea and her children by Liudmila Ulitskaya.Specifically,characteristics of the concept "children" are analyzed by building on the different times background(i.e.,mid-19th century and 20th century)shown in the works mentioned above.The conclusion part summarizes the main results and draws the major conclusions of this thesis.This study attempts to enrich the connotation of the concept "children" over the linguistic-cultural horizon,and to provide an appropriate interpretation for people to grasp distinguishing qualities of Russian culture and minds.
