The study of “shang” and “xia” as verb complement has always been one of the hotspots in the academic field.A lot of scholars have realized that“V+shang” and “V+xia” as isomorphism does exist in modern Chinese, however, only a few have done in-depth studies on this. The “V+shang”and “V+xia” as isomorphism shows that some verbs in Chinese can combined with both of them and the events are basically the same, but there are some internal semantic differences. This study aims to make a detailed description of syntactic and semantic analysis of “V+shang” and “V+xia” as isomorphism and explain them.Based on this research purpose,we used BCC corpus as the main research tool and selected three high-frequency monosyllabic verbs:“xie”(to write),“mai”(to buy)and “hua”(to use),they can all be used together with “shang” and “xia”.So we proposed the basic reason that the “V+shang” and “V+xia” as isomorphism is influenced by the meaning of verbs.By analyzing the structures which verbs can not combined with “shang” and “xia” at the same time,it is found that polysemous verbs have greater influence on this isomorphism.Secondly, different contexts would impact on this isomorphism. The modal verbs in the context and the discourse contexts will weaken the internal semantic differences of this isomorphism,so as to highlight their common semantics. The third reason is that the different construal competences would influence the language expression. When expressing the same event, because of the observer's different observing angles and reference objects,“shang” and “xia” are selected based on the expression,so that same event can be expressed but still those sentences have different internal semantics. This paper consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 is an introduction, which mainly expounds the research purpose, research method and research review.Chapter 2 introduces the predecessors' semantic researches on “shang”and “xia” as verb complement, the phenomenon of the asymmetry in the structure of “V+shang” and “V+xia”,and the discussion of syntactic and isomorphic phenomenon of “shang/xia”.Chapter 3 is the main chapter of this paper.Through the combination of three high-frequency monosyllable verbs and “shang” “xia”,we describe the “V+shang” and “V+xia” as ismorphism and explain them, and then list other monosyllable verbs which can combine with both of them. After describing this kind of phenomenon,we'll explain this phenomenon from three angles: the influence of the meaning of verbs, context and different construal competences.Chapter 4 specifies the semantic system of “shang” and “xia” as verb complement and concludes that “shang” as verb complement can express the meaning of tendency, attachment, result, and the state of beginning, and “xia” can express the meaning of tendency and result. The last chapter summarizes this paper and proposes research prospect.
