Study On The Potential Verb-complement Construction "V De /bu Xia(?/??)"

This paper studies on the potential verb-complement construction �V de/bu xia' in modern Chinese.Based on language facts,through the investigation and analysis of large-sized corpora,this paper studies the syntactic behavior,semantic types and the asymmetry phenomenon of the �V de /bu xia' construction in more detail.Apart from the conclusion,the content of this paper includes the following four parts.The introduction part introduces the research object of the paper,the previous research of the topic,the research purpose,the research methods and the source of the corpora.Chapter 1 analyzes the syntax of the �V de /bu xia' construction.We analyses the syllable characteristics and semantic categories of the variable �V' in the construction,the function and meaning of the invariables �de' and �bu',and the meaning of the invariable �xia'.On the basis of examining a large amount of corpora,the sentence composed of the �V de /bu xia' construction is divided into five basic construction types.Chapter 2 makes a detailed classification of the semantic types of the �V de /bu xia' construction.Based on the collection and arrangement of a large number of corpora,we divide the meanings of the �V de/bu xia' construction into three categories: �Possibility of Realizing Tendency',�Possibility of Realizing Results' and �Possibility of Realizing Condition'.Then the meanings of the �V de/bu xia' construction are classified according to the main verb used.Among them,the �Possibility of Realizing Tendency' meaning is divided into the possibility of concrete movement and the possibility of abstract movement.The �Possibility of Realizing Results' meaning is divided into eight possibilities: separation,abandonment,legacy,acquisition,completion,existence,decision,and accommodation.The �Possibility of Realizing Condition' meaning is divided into two types: static possibility and continuous possibility.Chapter 3 analyzes the asymmetry of the �V de /bu xia' construction.It is found that the asymmetry between �V de xia' and �V bu xia' is mainly reflected in the frequencies and the uses of sentences.The frequency of �V bu xia' is higher than that of �V de xia'.The �V bu xia' construction is used more frequently in declarative sentences and exclamatory sentences,and the �V de xia' construction is used more in interrogative sentences.Finally,this paper explains the reasons of the asymmetry phenomenon.
