According to both the history of modern poetry in the mainland and that in Taiwan,Ji Xian is an important poet.He not only was one of the most important figures of the modernist poetry school in Shanghai in the 1930 s but also brought the seeds of modernism into Taiwan. Therefore,he created the modernist school of Taiwan poetry and propelled the development of Taiwan modern poetry from the 1950 s to the 1960 s.In regard to the concept of Ji Xian's poetry composition, various emerging modernist poetry schools since Baudelaire were praised highly, for which presented the meanings and imagery in poetry using symbolism and surrealism in order to create imagery groups full of profound symbolic meanings and spiritual scenery full of fantasy. In poetry theory,Ji Xian always stuck to “pure poetry” theory, aimed at the completion of poetry itself, and opposed the shackles of traditional metrical poems. He adopted the form of free verse, and therefore emphasized that intellectuality is the essence of poetry. In this concept,Ji Xian's pursuit and exploration of modernist poetry has a clear view of evolutionary theory—abandoning the old and seeking the new.For a long time, the study of Ji Xian has focused more on his literary activities after going to Taiwan. The study of Ji Xian in Shanghai, however, got overlooked mostly. They failed to thoroughly explore the connection between Ji Xian's poetic activities and poetry theory he conceived in Taiwan, and the tide of modernist poetry in Shanghai in the 1930 s.As a result,Ji Xian's unique identity,as a border-crossing poet that brought Modernist Poetry to Taiwan, has still been ignored. This Master's thesis of mine hopes to sort through the trajectory of Ji Xian's literary activities, from the perspective of literary history, and discusses how Ji Xian brought the modernist qualities in his poetry and poetry theories when he was in Shanghai to Taiwan, and how he promoted the modernist poetic tradition in the process of localization. This thesis attempts to tap the link between literature and history, and hopes to show the creative development trajectory of Ji Xian across Shanghai and Taiwan,in order to make up for the lack of the existing study.
