New Literature And New Academy-on The Literature Education Of The Chinese Department In Yenching University From 1919 To 1937

At the end of the 20 th century,the innovation on “Literature Education” began to upsurge among the Chinese Department during the Republican period.But reseachers always took national universities as examples rather than the Christian universities.Different from national universities,Christian universities were working on more than just the educational modernization.More importantly,they devoted themselves into achieving sinicization.Taking Yenching University as an example,this essay will first look back at how the curricular system of Chinese Department came into being by going through the curriculum,the teaching faculty,the student journals and so on.Secondly,taking the Christian background of Yenching University into consideration,this essay will further discuss the Chinese literature education of Yenching University's Chinese Department from 1919 to 1937.This essay is divided into five parts.The introduction section will introduce the reason why the topic was selected,the meaning of this research and the research status at home and abroad.Besides,it gives the definition on literature education.In Chapter One,this essay presents the historical and cultural background of the Chinese Department's literature education in Yenching University.In Chapter Two,this essay explains the reason why Yenching University was thought to take the lead in New Literature Education by studying its curriculum and the student journals.To cater to the nationalism and seeking coexistence of Christianity and China's new culture,the Chinese Department in Yenching University was the first to set up the ministry of modern literature,offering courses on China's new culture,which was considered to be the prototype of the curriculum on modern literature.Later,with the ease of AntiChristianism and the support from Nanjing National Government,the literature education in Yenching University began to be more academic.In Chapter Three,the essay will further explore the academic transformation of the literature education in Yenching University by looking through the curriculum and teaching faculty.In the end,the essay reviews and summarizes the literature education in the Chinese Department of Yenching University from 1919 to 1937.It is found that there was inherent contradiction between academicalization of new literature and the specialization of the modern university system,which makes it difficult for the movement of new literature education to move on in its early stage.
