Based on Nussbaum's theory of anger, this dissertation discusses and analyses the concept and value of anger, and manages to find the right way of dealing with it through comparing the solutions offered by Nussbaum and Aristotle. The first chapter introduces the common sense of anger, and theories of Aristotle,Seneca and Aquinas to provide some background for the following discussion. The second chapter states the intentional content of anger and the relation between anger and retribution both from Nussbaum's view. The third chapter is on Nussbaum's evaluation of anger and her solution to this problematic emotion. The forth chapter attempts to refute Nussbaum's conclusion on anger by detaching retribution from anger and offering new understandings of retribution. The fifth chapter responds to some of the major controversies about anger on the basis of the precious chapters. This paper argues that a combination of theoretical virtues in both Nussbaum's and Aristotle's theories would be much more promising, which means to anger properly to achieve personal and social welfare by appealing to reason.
