A Study Of C-E Translation Of Report On The Work Of Government(2017) From The Perspective Of Critical Discourse Analysis

The annual Report on the Work of Government(RWG)covers various aspects of the country such as politics,economy,culture,diplomacy,and people's livelihood.It is an authoritative source of information for the international community to understand the current situation and development of contemporary China.Therefore,the importance of the translation quality of RWG is increasingly prominent.As a kind of political discourse,RWG seems to be more objective and fair than other discourses.Actually,while providing political information,it conveys more political stances and social motives.Hence,the translation of political texts can be influenced by power and ideology.Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)is a method of discourse analysis advocated by linguists since the 1970s.It mainly discusses the relationship between language,power,and ideology.It aims to analyze the ideology or power relations implicit in discourse,revealing the impact of ideology on discourse.Therefore,the English translation of RWG is a prominent research hotspot in the field of CDA.The Chinese and English versions of RWG are both official documents,so the original author and the English translator represent the Chinese government with identical political ideology,but two different languages have different linguistic forms when reflecting the same ideology.Based on the theory of CDA,this thesis analyzes how the English translation of RWG in 2017 conveys the ideological meaning of the source text from the four dimensions of classification,transitivity,modality,and transformation.The linguistic differences between the source language and target language are found and the reasons for these differences are explained.Thus,the relationship between language form and ideology is revealed,the impact of ideology on the translation of RWG is demonstrated in this thesis.Based on the ideological manipulation for the language form,this thesis summarizes the English translation methods of RWG and emphasizes the translator's role.The research results show that in the process of political discourse translation,the way to accurately convey the ideological connotation of the source text should be considered.At the same time,the culture and readers' acceptance of target language can not be ignored.Under this case,the purpose of maintaining the ideology of political power in a certain society can be achieved through political discourse translation accordingly.The method of CDA helps to improve the translator's ability to understand the linguistic structure and ideological differences between the source language and the target language so as to ensure that the source meaning and ideological implication can be conveyed in a way acceptable to the target language readers,thus improving the quality of translation.
