In recent years, with the implementation and development of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s "Belt and Road" initiative,China’s economic development has made new achievements with increasing national strength and international influence, attracting attention on the global stage.Report on the Work of the Government,as a form of an official document of the government of the People’s Republic of China, presents to the public about China’s politics, economy, culture, diplomacy and people’s livelihood. Its English translation also functions as an official source of information for the international community to understand China’s national conditions and state policies. Therefore, the research of the English translation of the Report on the Work of the Government is of great significance. However, existing research on the English translation of the Report on the Work of the Government mainly focuses on the linguistic features.Few studies attach importance to the text effect, that is,the image of the speaking subject shaped by the English translation. Therefore, guided by the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis and based on the self-built corpus, this thesis analyzes the linguistic features of the English translation of the Report on the Work of the Government(2000-2019)by examining the high-frequency words, personal pronouns and modal verbs to explore the text effect, namely, the Chinese government image built by the English translated texts of RWG.Results show that the English translation of the Report on the Work of the Government shapes the image of the authoritativeness of Chinese government, and the formation of it is closely associated with the social status of China, cultural differences and the translators’ thoughts. This study thus provides some enlightenment for translators in their translation studies at the lexical level.
