The teaching in the new era features leaner-oriented and encourages students to study by themselves,which requires teachers to try different kinds of new teaching modes.Considering the good results of the Monitorial System achieved in classroom teaching home and abroad,the implementation of the Monitorial System in senior high school English teaching has certain practical significance.Based on humanism,constructivism and the inquiry,the research is conducted among senior high school students in Daohang Art School in Guilin and it studies the teaching effects and the problems of the Monitorial System.There are three research questions: Firstly,what are the impacts of the Monitorial System teaching on students' English proficiency? Secondly,what are the impacts of the Monitorial System teaching on students' autonomous learning? Thirdly,what are the problems in the Monitorial System teaching mode? In addition,both quantitative and qualitative methods are adopted in this research whose instruments are test,questionnaire and interview.And data is collected and analyzed by using the SPSS 20.0.The results show that the overall English proficiency of the experimental class has been improved.Of course,the Monitorial System has different influences on students at different levels.Students with high scores make significant progress and students in the middle-group have also got achievements,though less great.Students in the low-score group are hardly affected.According to the questionnaire,theMonitorial System plays positive roles in students' autonomous learning,mainly in such three aspects as planning,self-evaluation and using of cognitive strategies.Students learn to arrange their time properly,make studying plans and they can make self-reflection when mistakes are found,and use learning strategies to solve problems.Through the interview and reflection,the author found that there are two main problems in the Monitorial System teaching mode: Firstly,the teaching mode takes a lot of time.Secondly,the teaching mode is not suitable for all students.Accordingly,the author puts forward relevant suggestions: Firstly,spare time can be effectively used.Secondly,students who are good at English or interested in English can be monitors.In conclusion,on the basis of the major findings,it proves that the Monitorial System teaching mode is helpful to students' English learning,and the author gives five teaching suggestions.
