The Study Of Current Situation Of English Extracurricular Reading In Urban Senior High Schools

The English language skills include four aspects of the ability: listening,speaking,reading and writing.Among them,reading,as a main form of target language input,plays an important role in English teaching in the entire high school teaching.Due to the limited time and contents of reading in the classroom leaning,the English extracurricular reading is particularly important in English language learning.Therefore,the study of English extracurricular reading is of great importance for teaching practice.This study took three senior high schools in Xi'an as cases.Based on the Input Hypothesis Theory and the Autonomous Learning Theory.The current situation of English extracurricular reading in urban senior high schools was investigated by using a questionnaire survey and the interview.206 students participated in the research.Then,the causes of the existing problems were analyzed.The results of this study indicate that at the urban senior high schools,students are lack of correct awareness of English extracurricular reading,the contents and choice methods are single,the amount of reading is low,the main purpose of doing reading is to deal with examinations,the strategies are needed,the vocabularies and heavy academic burden are main obstacles.The main reason for the above phenomenon is that the teachers' low awareness of English extracurricular reading and the lack of guidance.Besides,the poor monitoring mechanisms and reading atmosphere are mentioned.In view of the above issues,this study proposes that teachers are supposed to understand clearly the New Curricular Standards and cultivate the students' correct and positive reading idea,indicate students to choose multiple reading materials and efficient reading strategies,and establish a variety of monitoring mechanisms.The purpose is to improve students' ability of Englishextracurricular reading and develop students' comprehensive ability of English language.
