English learning requires a sufficient amount of input,but the limited time in class can not meet the requirements of English reading according to the the curriculum standards,so English extracurricular reading shows its importance in English learning.English extracurricular reading in traditional concepts is mainly used to help students accumulate language knowledge.However,with the implementation of the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition),it is particularly important to cultivate students' key competencies in English learning.In order to better promote the development of students' extracurricular reading in English,increase the efficiency of extracurricular reading,and make corresponding suggestions for students' extracurricular reading,we should first understand the current situation of extracurricular reading in English.This study combines questionnaire surveys and interviews to investigate the current situation of high school students' extracurricular reading in English.The main contents are as follows:(1)High school students' understanding and attitudes about the importance of extracurricular English reading.(2)Problems in high school students' extracurricular English reading.(3)Teachers' participation and guidance on English extracurricular reading.(4)Suggestions on the status of high school students' extracurricular English reading and teachers' guidance.First of all,the author sorted out the relevant literature on English extracurricular reading and core literacy research at home and abroad,and introduced the relevant theoretical basis.Then,students from Grade 1,Grade 2 and 8 English teachers in a middle school in Hainan were selected as the research objects.Through questionnaires and interviews,six aspects:students' awareness and attitudes about the importance of extracurricular reading,the frequency and reading volume of extracurricular reading,the choice of extracurricular reading materials,extracurricular reading obstacles and difficulties,teachers' participation and guidance,the cultivation of key competencies in extracurricular reading,were selected,from the perspective of teachers and students to know the current high school English extracurricular reading situation.Finally,according to the questionnaires and interview results,the problems of English extracurricular reading are found out as following:(1)lack of students' extracurricular reading interest and lack of high motivation for extracurricular reading,(2)lack of extracurricular reading time and single reading materials,(3)lack of the cultivation of students' thinking quality and learning ability,(4)teacher's participation andguidance need to be strengthened.Based on the problems,the corresponding suggestions are put forward:(1)creating a good English learning atmosphere and cultivating students' reading interest,(2)ensuring the reading time of extracurricular reading and enriching the extracurricular reading materials,(3)combining extracurricular reading with the reading during the class to strengthen the cultivation of students' thinking quality and learning ability,(4)increasing teachers' extracurricular reading guidance and establishing supervision and detection mechanisms.In addition,at the end of the study,the shortcomings of this study and the prospects for future research are also presented.
