| The book Big Data: How the Information Revolution is Transforming Our Lives is a revelatory exploration of the hottest trend in technology and the dramatic impact it will have on people's lives,economy,and society at large.As a popular science book,it intends to popularize scientific knowledge,so as to promote scientific spirit.Four features are demonstrated in the source text: scientificity,literariness,accessibility and interestingness.To adequately represent the four features of the source text,the translator grasped a comprehensive understanding of popular science writing through extensive reading,so as to translate the source text(Chapter One and Two).Since translating popular science texts is a highly purposive activity,the Skopos Theory,which redefines translation as a communicative action guided by its purpose,can be adopted to direct the translation process.The source text is easy and clear to understand,but the translation process was beset with obstacles.The translator categorized the difficulties including the following: 1 ? the translation of subtitles and rhetoric expressions;2?the translation of long and difficult sentences;3?the translation of terminologies.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory,these problems were dealt with by means of addition,annotation,division and so on.This report is composed of four chapters.Chapter One is the introduction,which includes three parts: background,significance of the translation task,and the translation process.Chapter Two presents the analysis of the source text.Chapter Three elaborates on the theoretical basis—Skopos theory.Chapter Four is to demonstrate how the translator applied Skopos theory to deal with difficulties in translating.Chapter Five is the conclusion,which mainly summarizes the lessons the translator has learned from translating the popular science text based on Skopos Theory. |
