Today,with the increasing globalization of the economy,data science plays a more crucial role in driving technological and economic development in China.For a wider readership,the popularization of data science is imperative.Getting Started with Data Science is one of best-sellers for popularizing data science.Based on the EC popular science text translation practice of Getting Started with Data Science,this report analyzes encountered difficulties and proposes corresponding solutions based on the Skopos theory.During the translation practice,the author has encountered the following difficulties: 1)Lexical level: difficulties in mistranslating terminologies as common words,and in conveying intended meaning of proper nouns;2)Syntactic level:difficulties in transforming structures of passive voice sentences and complex sentences;3)Textual level: difficulties in realizing textual coherence and logic.As a reader-oriented text,the popular science text aims to popularize scientific knowledge and promote scientific spirit to general readers.Therefore,the translation of popular science texts should follow reading habits of target readers.Under the guidance of Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule of the Skopos theory,the author proposes many translation methods and techniques to solve the encountered difficulties respectively: 1)Lexical level: annotation and paraphrase;2)Syntactic Level: passive voice conversion and addition;3)Textual level: substitution and omission.Tentative findings and results are expected to be useful and enlightened for the translation practice of data science text and other popular science text.
