The study of the noble family is a traditional topic in the field of the study of medieval China, and both the background of the Tang dynasty and the inner road of the development of the noble family have undergone new changes. This paper will be based on the traditional clan research model of “lineage-marriage official”,take Fan Zhaofei's “middle dimension” as the angle of view, make a detailed interpretation of the epitaph of Tang dynasty in historical data and history, and use the theory and method of historical geography to investigate and study Hedong three clans that consists of Wenxi Pei clan,Jiexian Liu clan and Fenyin Xue clan in the Tang dynasty. And this paper will grasp the dynamic state of the noble family under the political and social background of the Tang dynasty, and interpret the development venation of the noble family in medieval China from the perspective of family geography changes(including family migration and urban housing location). The contents of the study are as follows:The first chapter mainly investigates the migration of the three clans.Although the “centralization” of the noble family in the Tang dynasty was the general trend, the migration of them in different periods and families still showed different forms. The migration of the three clans could be divided into two stages before An Lu-shan's rebellion.First, they moved from Hedong villages to capital Chang'an,then some branches moved from Chang' an to Luoyang with the improvement of Luoyang's political status. After An Lu-shan's rebellion, the national scattered migration of the three clans started, the capital city and its environs(especially Luoyang)was no longer a unique living place that the noble family preferred, and this showed a state of inverse of “centralization”.The noble family, with the unification of Sui and Tang dynasties, naturally gathered in the capital city and its environs as the national political center. But some families still lived in hometown, this was undoubtedly a reaction to the “centralization”.The second chapter analyzes the factors which affect the changes of residence and burial place of the noble family in the Tang dynasty. In the process of the three clans' migration, the migration of burial place usually lagged behind the residence, and the two were not synchronous. The migration of the residence was mainly influenced by political factors, but the choice of burial place was mainly due to cultural and traditional considerations.Mount Mangshan, located in Luoyang, was important for the noble family because of its superior geographic location in terms of feng shui. When the three clans migrated from the village to Chang'an,their ancestral graves would retain for a long time. But when they migrated from Chang'an to Luoyang, the family burial place was transferred rapidly. And when the three clans began to migrate various parts of the country after An Lu-shan's rebellion, their family members also made efforts to be buried in Mount Mangshan after death. The third chapter discusses the spatial distribution of the three clans' houses in Chang'an and Luoyang. After moving to the city, noble families may be indifferent with other branches,or form a mutual aid group. The distribution of the three clans' houses in the cities was scattered, the relationship between the same clan was aloof, and there were few families inhabiting the same region. The specific location of the house reflects the strength of the family political power, the spatial changes of the family houses in the capitals manifests the ups and downs of a family. When a family appears dignitaries, its house will be close to the political core of the capital, and vice versa. The spatial distribution of the three clans' houses in the capitals was dominated by political factors.Abandoning the previous village relationship, the three clans were bureaucratized thoroughly. The conclusion summarizes the geographical changes of the three clans from the two directions of the family migration and the spacial distribution of urban houses, and discusses the trend of the development of the noble family.
