An Intention?based Pragmatic Analysis On The Legend Of Zhen Huan

The broadcast of the TV play The Legend of Zhen Huan has gained great popularity and has been welcomed by the unprecedented public.The wonderful dialogue has been highly praised by the audience.Researchers from different fields,such as linguistics,literature and even traditional Chinese medicine,have studied The Legend of Zhen Huan.However,few researchers have conducted the research on The Legend of Zhen Huan from the perspectives of pragmatics and intention.This paper not only discusses the significances of studying The Legend of Zhen Huan from the angle of the loss of the women's rights to speak in ancient society,the construction of Chinese traditional discourse image and the discovery of relevant pragmatic strategies,but also reveals the characteristics of the language from the following three aspects: the self-addressing,the antique flavor of the language and the euphemism of the discourse.In addition,this paper uses the principle of cooperation and the principle of politeness to analyze the conversational implicature of the language.In terms of the intention,the motivating factors behind the language are divided into two categories: the listener-oriented and the speaker-oriented.This paper attempts to answer the following research questions:1.What are the linguistic features of Zhen Huan's language? 2.What are the motivating factors behind the Zhen Huan's language?Through the study,this paper has the following findings:First,with regard to the linguistic features of Zhen Huan's language,this study found that the self-addressing of Zhen Huan changes in accordance with her status and her relationship with other relevant characters.For example:When Zhen Huan was involved in the selection of maidens serving the emperor,she called herself“??”facing the emperor and the empress dowager;When Zhen Huan was promoted to the position of“??”,she called herself“?”in front of the servants and“??”in front of the concubines whose positions were higher,and“??”in front of the emperor,the empress as well as the empress dowager;When Zhen Huan was promoted to the position of“??”,she called herself“?”in front of the concubines who maintained good relationships with her,she called herself“??”in front of the other concubines and the servants.She called herself“??”in front of the emperor the empress,and the empress dowager.In addition to the change of self claim of Zhen Huan's language,this article also finds that the lines in The Legend of Zhen Huan are antique,and the words and sentences in the language indirectly quoted the lines of ancient poem and songs.For example,in her words:“????,????????????,????????????”Here the utterance????was from the line???????which was the verse of a poem written by Liu Fangping in Tang dynasty.Finally,in terms of Zhen's language characteristics,we can find out that there is a euphemistic beauty in Zhen's language by analyzing some discourses and fragments of Zhen Huan's languageSecond,through the study of Zhen Huan's language,we can find that there are 12 motivating factors behind the language: to refuse somebody euphemistically,to dissolve conflicts,to avoid conflicts,to console and encourage,to satire,to show respect to the emperor,to give hints,to deliberately conceal,to show one's position,to warn,to advise,to tolerate.As for the contributions this paper has made:to begin with,The study of the linguistic features of Zhen Huan's language helps people better understand and appreciate the lines of The Legend of Zhen Huan.Morever,in the study of the significances of The Legend of Zhen Huan,this paper classifies the language strategies used in the The Legend of Zhen Huan.Therefore,the pragmatic strategies that have been summed up contribute to the study of foreign language strategies in China,and help people to communicate with the pragmatic strategies in their daily life.Last but not the least,the classifications of intentions behind Zhen Huan's language would also contribute to the study of intentions of language.
