This is a translation report for excerpts from New York State Executive Law Article 15 Human Rights Law. This law explains the regulations and stipulations of human rights in New York State. The author mainly translates Unlawful Discriminatory Practices in Part I. In the translation practice, the author finds that the long sentences have contributed to the difficulties in translation of the law. Therefore, long legal sentences are chosen as the theme of the report with the leading analysis of legal texts. In the report, the definition, the features and the types of long sentences are discussed. Further, the translating methods of long legal sentences are focused upon, among which, the methods of linear translation, reversing, splitting-off, recasting are mainly introduced. In the end, a great many examples of translation for common structures in long sentences are listed, with the hope that this practice may be beneficial to future study of legal translation. |
