This translation report is based on the translation activity of rendering the article released on The New Yorker's April 10th,2017 issue, titled "We Have No Choice" into the Chinese version. The original article, written by Ben Taub,a journalist and now a staff writer of The New Yorker, depicts a perilous and desperate migrant route through the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea,which starts in southern Nigeria, and goes through Niger,Libya, then across the Mediterranean and eventually to Italy. He provides an in-depth look into the world of sex trafficking in Nigeria, and reveals the horrible realities including human right abuse, sex trafficking, extortion, and etc.The source text is a typical new-journalism-style text, which introduces literature techniques into conventional news reporting.Instead of employing traditional journalistic story structures, the writer constructed vivid and shifting scenes and strong plotlines. When he wrote, the writer was totally and entirely spontaneous, free, unreachable, whereas the translator was limited from the text in the original—the artistic intention of the writer and literary techniques involved set the translator a difficult task to compensate the losses which might occur in the course of translation;enriched and switching scenes brought the translator the challenge for ensuring the coherence of the target text;and how to reproduce the colloquial style of direct discourse also brought difficulties for the translator. Therefore, based on the translation practice of the source text, the translator concludes several translation strategies to address the three most important aspects of translating new-journalism-style texts:how to avoid or minimize translation losses, how to guarantee a coherent text, and how to reproduce colloquial style in direct discourse.Accordingly, translation methods such as paraphrasing, amplification, conjunction, repetition are suggested to deal with the problems translators may meet in the process of translating new-journalism-style texts. The translator believes that the target readers of the translation version and the purpose of mass communication should be fully considered in the course of translating new-journalism-style texts. The paramount principle of translating this kind of articles is to render a text that enables readers to read freely and enjoy the process of reading without being hindered. The translator has carried on concrete studies on how to translate new-journalism-style texts,so as to offer some help to later media translation researchers.
