| The report is based on my translation of Chapters 8-10 in Translation: the Basics by Professor Juliane House.Published by the Routledge Press in 2017,the book introduces various basic notions and new important approaches to translation studies,including the definition of translation,translators' competence,translation quality evaluation,new trends in translation studies and the use of translation in everyday life.This interdisciplinary and comprehensive academic masterpiece,characterized by its plain words,is of great significance in enriching translation theories and providing new perspectives for translation studies.A highly-specialized academic text tends to show the research results in a certain field and offer important referential materials for a large number of researchers.Therefore,translators shall express the information in the source texts faithfully and completely,and enhance the readability and understandability of the target text at the same time.For this reason,this report aims to explain the translator's options on translation at lexical,syntactical and textual levels under the framework of Systemic-Functional Linguistics(SFL),in order to provide fresh insights into the translation of academic texts.The report is composed of five parts: Part One is the Introduction,briefly describing the background,objectives,significance of this translation project,and the agenda of this report.Part Two delineates the source text,including a short introduction to the author and the publisher,the analysis of the main content of the source text,and an illustration of some stylistic features of the source text.Part Three focuses on the translation process,as well as pre-translating work and proof reading.Part Four analyzes the difficulties in the translation process,such as polysemy,nominalizations and complex sentences,and concrete applications of the Systemic-Functional Linguistics.Part Five concludes with the lessons learned from the translation project and directions for future work. |
