To implement the national strategy of "Chinese culture going out",more and more books on Chinese culture and academics are being translated into different languages and spread all over the world. This thesis is a translation report on the main parts of Chapter One of A History of Chinese Folktales, the first comprehensive academic works which conducts a systematic study on Chinese folktales. As a major carrier of Chinese folk culture, folktales reflect the different aspects of social life and present a beautiful and vivid picture of natural and humanistic landscapes. They also manifest common people's desire, wisdom, perseverance and virtues. The translation of the book not only can advance the research on Chinese folk literature amid western academia, but also can promote the transmission of Chinese folk culture and national culture. On the basis of the skopos theory of German functionalism, this report is supposed to discuss the translation strategies deployed at different levels, namely, lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. The first chapter is a brief introduction to the background and significance of the research. The second chapter elaborates on the book, including the introduction of the author, book and an analysis of the stylistic features of the source text. The third chapter illustrates the theoretical framework: skopos theory, three main principles applied in the translation project and Nord's translation-oriented analytical model. The fourth chapter conducts a practical analysis of the translation strategies with sufficient examples. The last chapter concludes this translation report and points out the limitations.
