This paper, which regarded the1746journal articles published between1978and2010as the study object, gave a retrospection and summary for the folktaleresearch beginning from the reform and opening up. This paper carried on aBibliometric analysis on those articles from three aspects, i.e. the Annual Distribution, the Topics Distribution and the Construction of the Research team. It was found thatsince1978, the amount of papers on folktale study presented as a curve type growthon the whole with broadening field and increasingly diverse research methods, thoughit indeed had some slight fluctuations. Also a professional team was formed duringthat time. But there was an imbalance on folktale genre studies and there were notmany achivements in ontology research either. Then, it reviewed and summed up the text study and field study from theperspective of qualitative analysis. For the text study, it focused on comparative study, genre study and cultural anthropology study, reflecting the most prominent researchresults. For the field study, it paid attention to the stories about Western Hubei area, summarizing the existing achievements. The result of qualitative analysis showed that:the various ways of text study were different from but also closely related to eachother, assuming a coexist status. The field study broadened the researching area andhad gained abundant achivements. But there were problems in the fields ofnormalization and theory application. There is a parallel development in folktaleresearch, i.e. the text study and field study and there is a tendency to tilt from text tofield study, which caused the reflections of scholars.According to the above analysis, this paper argues that we should rethink therelationship between the text study and the field study. With the further developmentof these two study methods, a comprehensive research paradigm is going to beestablished on the basis of drawing on different theories and methods, researchschools and effective interactions.
