The paper takes the “old” words in the 6th Edition of Modern Chinese Dictionary as the research object.First of all,by reading the word meaning of the 6th edition of Chinese Dictionary,the author screens out all the words with "old" marks in the definition,and totally get 862 items and 899 related meanings.Second,the author describes these "old" words from the aspects of part of speech and categories.The research reveals that the number of old-time words is largest,and the old-saying least.From the aspect of part of speech,the words of "old" are merely involves nouns,verbs,adjectives,quantifiers and interjection.In terms of quantity,nouns and verbs plays a key role,in addition to a small number of quantifiers,adjectives and few interjection.From the point of view of meaning,16 categories of "old" words are involved in which "appellation" words occupies a dominant position,"custom and religious" and "business and economy" words follow,"communication" and "property" words are the least.Third,the reasons why the words become old can be summed up as two aspects —— "object disappear" and "word replacement".In this paper,the meaning of "old" words is summarized in the second chapter,and the reasons are discussed through a lot of concrete words.Forth,with the help of Chinese Dictionary,the author defines the commencement time of the use of old words and classified them into different categorizes.It was found that the "old" words began to be common in the period of the song Yuan dynasty,while in the time of Ming Qing dynasty they came to be rejected and some disappear gradually.Five,the author selects out 54 pieces of items by comparing the 5th and 6th version of the Modern Chinese Dictionary and describes them meticulously from the aspect of category,the last universal time and the disappearing reasons.Through observation,the author finds that the "old" words are mainly concentrated on the category of "appellation" and "custom and religious" categories which accounted for 59% in total.From the last universal time to see the "appellation" words occupy most pages in 6th Modern Chinese Dictionary,mainly focuses on "custom and religious","business and economy" and "Administration and Justice" fields.In the end,the data displays that the main reason for the words shift to old is the extinction of objects.With the aid of the CCL and the diachronic retrieval system of BCC corpus,the author deeply analysis the adding and delete phenomenon in the 5th and 6th editions of the Modern Chinese DictionaryThis paper,through a comprehensive review of the old words in Modern Chinese Dictionary,has gained a more complete understanding of the "old" words,and this research is helpful to the understanding of the dynamic vocabulary system.
