Textual Compensation Strategies By Professional Interpreters In Chinese-English Conference Interpretation

Interpreting activities can not only realize the interlingual code-switching,but also faithfully convey the communicative intention of the two parties.During the international communication,high quality interpretation can promote mutual understanding between people from different cultural backgrounds.The study of interpreting strategies and quality evaluation cannot simply check the superficial transformation of lexical and syntactic structures.We must pay attention to the integrity of the text and update the outdated evaluation model on interpretation strategy and quality which only focuses on morphology and syntax.As the carrier of information,text is a communicative case in the specific situation with a clear communicative motivation and a linguistic embodiment of the communication interaction,therefore,essential textualities including cohesion and coherence are important factors in the evaluation of interpretation quality.During interpreting,it is unavoidable that the pressure on interpreters may lead to some loss of information or distortion of meaning,which could be remedied through the use of compensation strategies in the process of mother tongue and second language communication.By investigating the evaluation model of interpretation quality,this paper comprehensively proclaimed the significance and value of discourse in interpreting communicative activities,and sums up the strategies of information compensation,grammar compensation and textual compensation in interpreting.To demonstrate the textual compensation mechanism of professional interpreters in the process of interpretation of official texts,the transcribed text of interpreting by professional interpreters in the 2018 Government Work Report(about 100000 words)are sampled and the use of all kinds of interpreting compensation strategies in the whole text were analyzed,which obtain a total of 389 devices,namely 32 times of relevance words compensation,3 times of discourse structure compensation,and 8 times of referential anaphora compensation.And thematic progression analysis is carried out for cohesion compensation and RST structure analysis is carried out for coherence compensation.In order to further the research,this paper also makes a comparative analysis of the textual compensation in the 2014-2017 Government Work Report to detect the trend.The results showed that on the basis of the previous information compensation and grammatical structure compensation,professional interpreters adopted the textual compensation strategy in order to optimize the communicative effect,to effectively convey information,while preserving and interpreting the stylistic structure.And more textual compensation strategies were applied year by year,meaning that professional interpreters attended more to the overall style of the text.The study of this thesis not only expands the scope of the study of interpreting strategy and quality assessment,but also has certain guiding significance for the process of interpreting pedagogy and learning tasks.This paper can be divided into five parts.The first part introduces the research background,research significance and research questions.The second part is the literature review,starting with the evaluation of interpretation quality,and among all the indicators that might effect the evaluation of interpretation quality,the acceptability,the most controversial one was analyzed.And finally,the text coherence which affect the acceptability of interpreting the most is summarized.Then from the angle of interpreting strategy,the author summarizes the application of compensation strategy in interpreting process,and points out that error correction is not the only reason that will activate the use of compensation strategy.The third part gives a brief introduction to the method of using the paper,explains the source of the corpus,and introduces the research process in detail.The significance and value of discourse in interpreting communicative activities were comprehensively grasped.The fourth part is the main body of this paper,which summarizes the strategies of information compensation,grammar compensation and textual compensation through the processing of corpus,data analysis and research.To demonstrate the textual compensation mechanism of professional interpreters in the process of interpretation of official texts.The fifth part is the summary and conclusion of the whole study.
