Syntactic linearity has been one of the most commonly used strategies in Simultaneous Interpretation(SI).Using syntactic linearity can help interpreters reduce memory pressure and focus on dealing with incoming information to ensure the accuracy and coherence of interpretation.Due the lack of experience and ability,student interpreter's use of syntactic linearity must be different from that of professional interpreters.However,there are few experiments to compare professional and student interpreters' application of syntactic linearity in English-Chinese(E-C)SI.Based on Daniel Gile's Effort Model Theory,this thesis aims to explore the difference between professional and student interpreters in their use of syntactic linearity strategy in E-C SI through empirical research.The professional interpreter of Davos Forum and six postgraduate students majoring in English Interpretation are selected as experiment subjects in the experiment part of the study.Through interpreting tasks,the empirical research is designed to examine the correlation among the frequency of using syntactic linearity,information integrity and accuracy.In this way,this thesis can offer some guidance for the future practice and study of student interpreters.The empirical research concludes that:first,professional and student interpreters both use syntactic linearity often,but the frequency differs-professional interpreters use the strategy more often than student interpreters;second,in E-C simultaneous interpreting,there is a positive correlation among syntactic linearity,information integrity and accuracy.The more frequent interpreters use the strategy,the better their information integrity and accuracy is.;third,proper addition and conversion strategy can make up for segmentation's cutting of the original text. |
