In the field of interpretation,in addition to professional interpreters and student interpreters,a group of noninterpretation major interpreters whom the academia calls “ad hoc interpreters”(Hutchinson,Gullick, and Chang,2019: 3)are also actively offering interpreting services in the market.Although they do not have professional interpretation knowledge, their proficient bilingual skills and deep domain knowledge of the industry make them possess some interpreting abilities. The interpretation quality of such interpreters and their similarities and differences with professional interpreters are worthy of in-depth analysis, because such research can provide new visions for new interpreters. This study combines schema theory,a psychological theory, and uses empirical research methods to explore the impact of the professional backgrounds of interpreters on the quality of their interpretation. The hypothesis is that those ad hoc interpreters have deep domain knowledge,so their interpretations are more accurate than professional and student interpreters, and the quality of interpretation is also higher.Through empirical research combined with schema theory analysis, although ad hoc interpreters have a certain interpretation ability, both the accuracy and quality of the interpretation are lacking. In addition, research also shows that if the interpreter relies too much on the domain knowledge while neglect the source language information,he may be misled by his incorrect assumption and thus fail the following up interpreting. This article provides some reference for novice interpreters.
