A Report On The Translation Of Traveling Around China

As China's economy and society is developing at an unprecedented speed,industrial structure has been continuously transformed and upgraded.As a result,the contribution that tourism industry has made to the national economy is becoming more and more prominent.To better introduce the beautiful scenery in China and further promote the development of Chinese tourism industry,the translator translated two parts of a classic of Chinese tourist book named “Travelling around China”,which was published by the Joint Publishing House of Beijing.This report mainly discusses the Chinese-English translation of tourism texts based on Katharina Reiss' s theory.According to the language function model of Karl Buhler,Katharina Reiss divided texts into three main types,namely information function texts,expression function texts and vocative function texts.(Yuan,2007)She suggests that different translation strategies should be adopted based on the text function and its corresponding language features and use of communication situation.This reported is presented under the perspective of text type theory raised by Reiss.It discusses how to choose reasonable and appropriate translation strategies and methods to guide the translation practice.After the translation and research,it is found that each text type expresses specific communicative functions.Therefore,during the translation process,the translator should first seize the overall characteristics of the source language text and identify the author's intentions.Then the translator should recognize the means that the author uses to achieve his or her functional goals and correctly select translation strategies.(Reiss,2004)In terms of tourism texts,translation should focus on their informative and vocative function and have a clear communication goal to achieve translation purpose.The translator takes Reiss' s theory of text typology of translation as the theoretical basis,trying to solve the translation obstacles from a typical angle.The introduction and adoption of text type theory gives a new look to the translation text,which will influence other scholars or translators and provide fresh ideas for their researches.
