The Sociolinguistics Study On Couple's Appellation In Harbin

Chinese couple's appellation is an important component of Chinese appellation.There are a wide variety of the Chinese couple's appellations in different regions.The research on local couple's appellation is meaningful,which will help enrich the Chinese couple's appellation and contribute to the research of Chinese appellations.Based on the theory and approach of sociolinguistics,the thesis investigates the form and use of couple's appellation in Harbin and how the different social factors such as,gender,age,degree of education and profession influence the choice of couple's appellation.The thesis is composed of following parts: introduction,investigation of couple's appellation in Harbin,the influence of social factors on the choice of couple's appellation,investigation on the usage of couple's appellation--“Laogong” and “Laopo” in Harbin,analysis on the phenomenon--the miss of the title “Zhangfu”,which used to be a common use in Harbin,and conclusion.Through interview with different people,we get 13 classes of direct addressing and 9 classes of back-appellation.There are 18 forms as far as female's direct addressing from their spouse is concerned,which appear 484 times in this survey;while the form of male's direct addressing from their spouse is 14 in all,which appear 540 times.As for the back-appellation,there are 14 forms of female's back-appellation from their husband and 22 forms of male's back-appellation from their wife,the former appear 434 times while the latter 450 times.In this investigation there are 1865 times direct addressing and back-appellation in all.The author has listed the occurrence frequency of each addressing and the proportion of it to total frequency,from which find some rules are found.As for direct addressing,no matter for males or females,the use of “zero title”,“hi”,“the baby's daddy or mommy”,“name”,and such special title as “Lao gong” and “Lao po” are in high frequency,while the other titles,although various in form,appear comparatively fewer times,which is also the same as in the back-appellation.The author has calculated the proportion of the use of different titles and studied the influence of gender,age,degree of education,profession and other factors on the choice of couple's appellation.As a result,the author finds that gender and age have a great influence on the choice of couple's appellation,while profession and degree of education have little influence.The thesis also investigates the use of the special title “Lao gong” and “Lao po” in Harbin.And the author finds a phenomenon--the miss of the title “Zhangfu”,which used to be a common use in Harbin,by analysing the psychosocial factors causing such phenomenon,the authors finds there are a wide variety of factors which will influence the choice of couple's appellation.
