The study about students' Chinese character learning strategy is rare among the research field of Chinese teaching and learning in Peru.The students from Confucius Institute of the Pontifical University Catholic of Peru have quite big problems concerning the learning of Chinese characters.Since the Chinese character learning strategy has great impact on the learning efficiency of Chinese characters,the author designed a questionnaire about it and surveyed 307 registered students studying in Adult Class of Confucius Institute.By this means,the author tries to investigate students' personal preference on different kinds of strategies and their basic situation of Chinese character learning.A strategy training experiment was conducted with 30 students from basic level as subjects to test the effectiveness of the implementation of the strategy and its effectiveness on different levels of students and different kinds of errors.Finally,based on the results of the survey and the experiment,relevant teaching suggestions were put forward.According to the results of questionnaires,we conclude that the shape strategy is most frequently used,followed by the sound and meaning strategy,stroke strategy,metacognitive strategy,application strategy,preview and review strategy,memory strategy,mother tongue strategy,while the grouping strategy is most infrequently used.We also find that among the three elements of Chinese character,students think the sound is the most difficult part,the second is the shape and the easiest is the meaning.By further analyzing the use of various strategies,this paper finds that students are not good at establishing the connection between the shape,sound and meaning.They are lack of a systematic overview of the Chinese character system.In addition,students are accustomed to rote learning,which means their ways of learning are deficient of imagination and creativity.And also,situations where students can apply what they have learnt are limited.By comparing the results of the survey of the four levels of students,we draw the conclusion that students from the third level have the highest enthusiasm for using strategies,while students from the second level have the lowest enthusiasm for using them.Furthermore,the higher the level of students,the better they use the application and grouping strategies.The lower the level of students,the shape of character is more difficult for them to learn.Based on the results of the survey of 30 subjects from the basic level and the errors of Chinese characters they made in the mid-term examination,the author designed a program of strategy implementation.The subjects were divided into an experimental group and a control group,and a 5-week strategy implementation experiment was conducted.The experiment proves that strategy training is effective in reducing stroke errors,but the effect in reducing component errors and character errors is not obvious.Besides,the training is more effective on underachievers than on outstanding students.Finally,according to the Chinese level of the teaching object,the author puts forward targeted teaching suggestions to the teachers.
