Vocabulary is the carrier of pronunciation,semantics and grammar.The larger vocabulary one has,the better he can capture effective information.At the same time,one's abilities to listen,speak,read and write can get corresponding improvement with the expansion of vocabulary.It is obvious that for foreign language learners,the number of the vocabulary they have learned is a very important factor in determining their foreign language level.In order to know the difficulties and problems of Chinese English learners' English vocabulary learning,this paper uses two tests,the questionnaire and the interview on 146 students who have just entered the second grade of Shuo Cheng No.1 High School(SCNHS).The purpose is to unveil the students' English vocabulary learning difficulties and problems.The tests include the verb,noun,verb-preposition collocation acquired by the 146 students in Grade 1.The questionnaire concerns the problems of English vocabulary learning of SCNHS.The interview is about the specific problems of vocabulary learning of in SCNHS.The results show that students think vocabulary learning is important,but due to insufficient learning,lack of interest and weak initiative in vocabulary learning,etc,students have not gained much in vocabulary learning.Specifically:1)The form,collocation and the meaning of words are the three difficult points for students to learn vocabulary.2)Because of the fixed method of memorizing vocabulary and the lack of timely review,the students' mastery of vocabulary is not firm enough,especially for words with similar spelling or different words with similar meanings.3)Even if some students remember the spelling and meaning of a word,they know little about the exact usage of the word.Therefore,they cannot use it correctly.4)Students have the idea of seeking shortcuts in the process of vocabulary learning,and lack the spirit of perseverance.In view of the above difficulties and problems in vocabulary learning,this paper suggests that learners should deal with vocabulary according to pronunciation rules,word formation,association and other methods in the process of learning.Teachers should actively help students to develop and apply vocabulary by cultivating students' autonomy,helping students to review and consolidate in time,guiding students to use lexical chunks and situational teaching methods.Besides,refining reading materials and guessing vocabulary in discourse context are also good methods in the process of teaching.
