As one of the representatives of magical realism in the 20th century in Latin America,Garcia Marquez became the Nobel Prize Winner in 1982 for his masterpiece One Hundred Years of Soitude. Many scholars have interpreted the novel from various perspectives, but few of them cover the spatial elements. In this thesis,Henri Lefebvre's spatial theory serves as a theoretical framework, trying to explore characters' plights of Buendia family from the perspectives of physical space, social space and mental space so as to uncover their influence over the characters. The first chapter discusses physical space in the novel. It is the external material basis for human's survival. This chapter will analyze Macondo and Buendia house respectively. They have witnessed the entire process of the rise and fall of Macondo and Buendia family and also have reflected the metaphorical meaning of solitude, which indicate the correlation between space shifting and character's fate. The second chapter explores social space in the novel. The political, economic, sex and power relationship will be analyzed.Social space in the novel is represented by confronted social relations between the natives and colonizers as well as the females and the males, which uncovers the reasons of deepening solitude. The third chapter endeavors to study mental space in the novel.Solitude,as the main mental space of the characters,is represented by self-escape and loss of self.It reveals characters' inner struggles and changes in the face of power oppression in social space.
