Inquiry teaching is a teaching model which refers to students' independent learning,inquiry and cooperation with others to achieve the requirements of cognitive and emotional goals in curriculum standard under the guidance of teachers.Traditional reading teaching model enables students to acquire knowledge passively,which seriously affects students' learning interest,independent inquiry,innovation and problem-solving strategies.In order to adapt to the new round of curriculum reform and explore a more effective teaching method of English reading,the author employs a new model of inquiry teaching for English reading class in senior high school and carries out a series of teaching experiments to study the effectiveness and feasibility of inquiry teaching model.After a brief description of the relevant theory of inquiry teaching model,the author collects,analyzes and discusses the data of questionnaire and students' reading grades to answer the following questions:(1)Can inquiry teaching improve senior high school students' performance in reading class(including students' interest of learning,independent learning and reading strategies)?(2)Can inquiry teaching improve senior high school student's achievements in reading tests? The subjects of this study are 45 students from Class 59(experimental class)and 45 students from Class 60(control class)of No.12 Senior High School of Linfen,Shanxi province.During the experiment,45 students in experimental class follow the inquiry-teaching model for reading,and 45 students in control class follow the traditional reading teaching model.After the implementation of inquiry teaching for one semester,the author draws the following conclusions after data analysis and discussion:(1)Questionnaire shows that after the implementation of inquiry teaching,experimental class students' interest in English reading class has grown;students' independent learning ability is enhanced;students begin to use reading strategies;(2)Reading test scores shows that: after the implementation of inquiry teaching,reading average score of experimental class is 5.53 points higher than control class,and reading scores of experimental class students have been significantly improved.Insummary,inquiry teaching model is effective in English reading teaching in senior high school,and it can not only stimulate students' reading interest and enhance students' independent learning ability,but also improve students' application of reading strategies and reading achievements.The author gets the following implications after the experiment:(1)Teachers need to change teaching concepts and enhance their ability to explore and guide in class;(2)Teachers should read textbooks and design inquiry content carefully;(3)Teachers should change the learning model of students and guide students to study independently;(4)Teachers should change the single evaluation system and make a good classroom atmosphere.
