Julia Kristeva is a distinguished French philosopher, psychoanalyst and literary critic. Her study involves many fields such as linguistics, semiotics, structuralism, psychoanalysis, feminism and cultural criticism. She introduced Bakhtin's main theoretical achievements into the literary and academic circles, and creatively put forward the "Intertextuality Theory" on the basis of Bakhtin's"Dialogue theory." Generally speaking,Bakhtin's academic thoughts are extensive and profound, and his communication system is popular in the field of humanities. He established the theory of alliterative novel, the new historical and cultural thought-carnival poetics,to open up new fields for literature and cultural studies.By analyzing the source and development process of Intertextuality theory, this essay aims to figure out the process of Kristeva's absorption and re-creation of Bakhtin's Dialogue Theory. In a summary, her theory of intertextuality is also integrated with semiotics and starts to reach the field of psychoanalysis.Bakhtin's significance to Kristeva lies in promoting the openness of language research to "significant experience," and putting the practice of language and all meanings into social, political, historical dimensions and so on.This essay will be divided into four parts to explore the influence of Bakhtin's Dialogue Theory on the formation of Kristeva's Intertextuality theory. The first part mainly introduces the formation and development of Bakhtin's "Dialogue Theory," and deepens the theoretical system of communication and dialogue through the study of alliteration and carnival novels. The second part presents the establishment and development of Kristeva's Intertextuality theory. The main feature of her theory is that any text is the absorption and replacement of other texts, and the text is always in a dynamic process.Focusing on the meaning generation mechanism of text, the theory of Intertextuality breaks the traditional literary theory and opens a new direction for it.The third part specifically illustrates the process that Kristeva extends the dialogue and ambivalence "words" to the concept of "text" under the influence of Bakhtin. It highlights and emphasizes the intersection between text and other texts. Finally, achieving a turning point from structuralism to post-structuralism,Kristeva show her difference from Bakhtin's understanding of the subject and turns the intersubjectivity into the intertextuality, and later explores the interdisciplinary research beyond linguistics. In a summary,Kristeva has established a pluralistic literary system. The fourth part describes the other sources and influences of Kristeva's Intertextuality Theory. After a comprehensive introduction of Bakhtin' s Dialogue Theory and Kristeva's Intertextuality Theory, this essay points out that Kristeva's thoughts have inherited and developed Bakhtin's research, combining the formal and historical study and forming broadly the research of text theory. In the later stage,Kristeva's research gradually got off the theoretical impacts of Bakhtin, developing as interdisciplinary field such as psychoanalysis, deconstruction and so on.She then started forming her own unique theoretical system.
