The first seventeen years after the founding of the People's Republic of China experienced a unique stage in the modern music history of our country.During that time,an era marked by fiery enthusiasm, turbulence, and prosperity, literary and artistic groups were caught within the face of dilemma between the choice for “individualism or collectivism” as well as between that for “literature and art or politics” against the historical background of “collectivism” and efficient politics. In this huge field of tension composed of the interaction between politics and the combination of literature and art,as well as between collectivism and individualism, what choice would the members of the literature and art circle make? Over the first seventeen years since the founding of the People's Republic of China,Ma Sicong has undergone a series of ups and downs. He was,at the beginning, decently treated and highly respected by the new regime as a musician, the first president of the Central Conservatory of Music, and vice-president of Chinese Musicians' Association, but was publicly denounced in the Cultural Revolution, after which he decided to leave for the United States eventually.Considering such a vicissitude of life, his experience and inner changes in mental state can be indubitably reflected in his works. Therefore,we selected the best-concealed solo instrumental works and placed them in the grand and complicated historical and cultural field of “the first seventeen years since the founding of the People's Republic of China”,so as to analyze the similarities and differences between the aesthetic tastes and ideals revealed by Ma in his solo instrumental creations, and the mainstream domestic literary and artistic value orientation dominated by the government at that time,so as to find out how composers made their choices in the literary and artistic environment at that time, that is,choosing between “collectivism or individualism” and between “politics or art and literature”.What personality traits does such choice reveal of Ma as a member of the art circle?...
