Multimodal texts are regarded as the employment of multi-modes for meaning producing in the achievement of communicative purpose. In this report, the author explores how to translate a multimodal text with words and pictures to introduce the art of Chinese Nianhua through semantic and communicative translation. This report focuses on the application of Peter Newmark's translation strategy and the analysis of translation cases. It first describes the translation project and the translation process. Then, the concept of multimodality is introduced for providing a perspective on the translation of the terms and titles of Nianhua, which explains the interplay between the text and the pictures. The author expounds the complementary relationship between verbal and pictorial descriptions through case analysis, and resolves the difficulty of how to exploit the multimodal feature in rendering through the application of semantic and communicative translation. This report presents a perspective accounting for how meanings are made in multimodal texts and demonstrates the application of Newmark's translation strategies for Chinese-English translation of multimodal texts. It would be a meaningful reference for further work of such translation.
