In Chinese,classifiers and measure words are parts of the nominal classifiers system,and nominal classifiers have mainly developed from the grammaticalization of nouns and verbs,a process that gave nominal classifiers the functions of classifying,measuring and categorizing nouns,these functions are based on the relations between the classifiers and the measure words and the nouns' essential and accidental properties.On this basis,this research analyses the teaching design of the grammatical and categorization functions of nominal classifiers.The first chapter is the introduction and the state or art of this research.The state or art includes the conception of classifiers as being nouns,the establishment of classifiers as an independent grammatical category,and the research of nominal classifiers in Western countries.Moreover,in this chapter the external and internal factors of the creation of nominal classifiers will also be included,the differences between classifiers and measure words,the relations between Han culture,cognition and nominal classifiers,as well as the international teaching of nominal classifiers.The second chapter is an analysis of the teaching of nominal classifiers in the textbook series “HSK Standard Course”,particularly from the quantitative,qualitative and etymological perspectives.In the third chapter,a proposal for the teaching design of the grammatical functions of classifiers and measure words will be presented,particularly in terms of both types' syntactic similarities and semantic and mathematical differences.The fourth chapter,it is a proposal for the teaching design of the ellipsis of nominal classifiers as well as the insertion of particles,adjectives and numbers in the nominal classifiers phrase.In the fifth chapter,the last teaching design proposal will be presented,which is about teaching the categorization functions of nominal classifiers,specially,the cognitive basis of nominal classifiers and how the Han use metaphors to categorize entities and represent their understanding of the world,as well as the case study of the nominal classifier “zhi”.The sixth chapter includes the advices for nominal classifiers teaching.And finally,in the seventh chapter,the conclusions of this research will be presented.
