This report contains two parts, the first part is the translation of chapter two and chapter three of Application of Remote Real-Time Monitoring to Offshore Oil and Gas Operations(15000 words),which is published in the National Academic Press. The main author of the source text is the Transportation Research Board, and it puts forward advice on the use of real-time monitoring to improve safety and reduce environmental risk in offshore oil and gas operations to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement of the United States Department. The translator chose the second and the third chapter of the source text as translation material. The second chapter includes a brief overview of industry operations and background information explaining aspects of the offshore operational environment relevant to the application of remote real-time monitoring. The third chapter concludes the benefits of real-time monitoring, which can provide references to related workers in the field of offshore oil and gas. This text has been authorized to be translated by National Academic Press, and there has not been any Chinese version published in China.According to Newmark's text typology, the source text features information function, which is marked with charts, abbreviations, proper nouns, long sentences, and terminologies. The translation project is guided by communicative translation theory, which stresses the effect on readers of target language,in other words, the translation should conform with the target language readers' cognitive system.Based on the theory, the translator follows the rule of "reality first" to express the content and effect as accurately as possible. This report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction of the translation proj ect, including the background information, purposes and significance of the project, and the linguistic features of the source text. The second chapter gives a description of the translation process, which includes understanding the source text and restructuring the sentences(Zhang Peiji,2009).Therefore,this chapter includes the preparation work,in which the communicative theory is introduced, and the translator also incorporates while-translation part and proofreading. The third chapter is case analysis,in which the translator summarized the difficult and key points in the translation process, and listed the translation techniques, namely conversion, amplification, division,in combination with specific examples. The last chapter is the conclusion of enlightenment of the translation process, and unsolved problems.Through this translation, the translator has accumulated experience in the translation of science and technology text, and has preliminarily grasped the linguistic features and translation methods of such texts, which helps lay the foundation for the translator to work on the translation of petroleum science and technology in the future.
