Chinese Literature was the first and the only magazine that introduced the Chinese literature to the other countries. The special political and social conditions from 1951 to 1966 had endowed a great significance to make a further study in this period's literature works. The domestic studies on the translation of ethnic-minority-themed novels were only a few,and none of them was studied from the perspective of foreign publicity to explore ethnic-minority-themed novels' English version. The translation operations of ethnic-minority-themed novels selected by Chinese Literature were greatly influenced by the foreign publicity principles during the period of 1951-1966.This paper has two main research questions.(1)How is the nature of foreign publicity expressed by the selection of ethnic-minority-themed novels in Chinese Literature?(2)How is the nature of foreign publicity expressed by the translation strategies adopted to translate those ethnic-minority-themed novels in Chinese Literature? In order to solve these two research questions, this paper was based on the39 ethnic-minority-themed novels published in Chinese Literature from 1951 to 1966,and used the foreign publicity theory proposed by Xi Shaoying. This paper found that the characteristics of those ethnic-minority-themed novels could be grouped into three main categories: first, standing by correct Party spirits and policies, following the Mao Zedong's thoughts, and showing the social reality of China;second, showing the new prosperous life of Chinese people under the condition of national unity and prosperity, and taking the positive tone to propagate the positive conditions of the PRC;third, presenting Chinese special national features and colorful ethnic minority customs, telling the target readers that China had various national cultures among all equal ethnic minorities, and respecting different great traditional cultures of all ethnic groups.Through the analyses of the translation operations of ethnic-minority-themed novels, these translation strategies were influenced by the foreign publicity principles advocated by Chinese government during 1951-1966.And the influence could be reflected in the translated version from five aspects: first, complying with the original facts, and transferring the true appearance of ethnic minorities' social, political and economic conditions;second, respecting target readers' different cultural backgrounds, national traditions, political systems, thinking modesand recognition habits;third, seeking common points while respecting different cultural values, and achieving the purpose of interactions between different countries;fourth, following the government policies and the Party spirits, and conveying a clean and healthy political environment of China to foreign readers;fifth, paying attention to the positive aspects of China, and taking the past backward situation as necessary background descriptions.
