Han Yu has a significant and far-reaching influence in the history of Chinese literature and Chinese culture, and scholars of all ages highly praises his position in the "Literature" and"Orthodoxy".However, during the May 4th period, western literature and ideology have a huge impact on Chinese traditional literature and culture. The old and new literati who uphold their different cultural positions have different opinions on the evaluation of Han Yu who is considered one of the idols of traditional Chinese literature and culture. The Tongcheng school literati cling to Han Yu's literary and political system, demonstrating the unique literary value of the ancient Chinese, and also seek to adjust the position of the ancient language in the entire Chinese cultural system in the new historical environment. But the new literature advocates who accept western studies extremely fiercely criticise Han Yu,guided by the ideas of "democracy" and "science".They believe that ancient Chinese will be replaced by vernacular Chinese, and confucianism is only a shackle of human nature under the liberating trend of liberal personality. So Han Yu's literary status drops sharply.Since then, according to the principle of overcorrection, dissatisfied with the fact that Han Yu's literary status Is too degraded,Chen Yinque et al have backwashed and rectified and reaffirmed Han Yu's eternal value in the history of Chinese literature and culture. This article attempts to sort out the different evaluations of Han Yu by the old and new literati before and after May 4th from the perspective of the history of conception, and present different styles of old and new literature and culture in a specific case.
