The dissertation aims to explore the question how Chinese left-wing films in 1930s process and represent the city space of Shanghai and transform it into the carrier of ideology.Based on the theory of film space,the space in films is formed by the creator's processing of the physical space,which is the combination of subjectivity and objectivity.It is not only the reflection of social reality,but a way for creators to express their thoughts and feelings.Therefore,the representing of urban space in the left-wing films usually demonstrates a wealth of information about the time and Left-wing ideology.The introduction mainly introduces the concept and theory of film space,and sorts out the representative researches on Shanghai image and the image strategies in left-wing films.This chapter also points out the shortcomings of existing achievements,indicates the research purpose and significance.The first chapter selectively analyzes Shanghai's representative spaces in the 1930s,which are also the spaces most commonly used by left-wing movies to represent Shanghai,with each has its own imaging function and significance.The second chapter mainly analyzes the representation of city space in left-wing films.The arguments mainly include three aspects:camera angle,montage,color and light.The third chapter discusses the image strategies of the left-wing films.Through the strategies of repetition,contrast and metaphor,the left-wing films turn the city into an object under examination and criticism,which vests the urban space with the function of ideological expression.In summary,left-wing films have successfully transformed Shanghai into a fixed,controllable,single object of judgment by transforming Shanghai into a symbol,which also satisfies the modern imagination of audience.Through the comparison of different social spaces and classes,the left-wing films achieves the ideological critique and the grasp of discourse power.They also convey discourses of politics and revolution by different kinds of metaphor.
