All sort of ideas of women's education in modern China can be interpreted into different meanings under different social and cultural environment,reviewing and inquiring these ideas,therefore,can help to reveal the evolution of meaning in themselves as well as the changes of some views on education,women and gender behind them.At the same time,as a part of history of Chinese ideas in modern times,modern ideas of women's education are also closely related to the social change in modern China.As a result,the study about the ideas of women's education in modern China will present the historical pictures of the society in modern China from different aspects.In later half of the 19 th century,“Initiating Women Education” was initiated by the intellectual as a salving-nation proposal;and in the early 20 th century,with the national crisis and the influence of western civilization increasingly deepening,this trend had been accepted by most intellectual as a way to strengthen the country and maintain the race,becoming an important trend of thought in Chinese society at that time.In general,the content of the trend mainly focuses on two aspects,the relationship between initiating women education and social development and the relationship between initiating women education and female development.Then the trend affected the practices and activities.People at that time carried out a series of activities,such as founding the female school,allowing women studying in universities,making middle school the coed school and so on.With the trend and practices of “Initiating Women Education”as its background,the traditional education view on “devoted wife and loving mother” was inwardly decomposed into “absolute devoted wife and loving mother”,“relative devoted wife and loving mother”and “maternalism”.With the process of social modernaization and social and economic development speed up and the influence of western civilization deepening,three major ideas of women's education,that are female nationals,equality of men and women and independent personality,appeared in modern China.Generated with the appearance of modern national concept and nationals concept,the education idea of female nationals indicates the acceptance of women's national identity and stresses the women's duties to thestate.The educational idea of equality between men and women is a manifestation of the thought of equality between men and women in the ideas of women's education,emphasizing that men and women enjoy the same right to education,and requiring men and women to receive equal education.The idea of independent personality education is to abandon women's various additional identities and make “woman” a “person”.It is an educational idea that truly takes women as the subject,and pursue women's independence personality,and is also the ultimate goal of women's education development in modern times.The overall development of the ideas of women's education in modern China shows the features like the decreased proportion of women's family responsibilities,the enhancement of the country's duties,and the prominent status of women's subject identities.The generation and evolution of various ideas are related to specific social contexts,and their characteristics of the times are clear.In addition,although the modern ideas of women's education has not been completely accepted by modern society,it still has an impact on the content of modern women's education,the reform of modern school system,the liberation of women,and the change of social ideas.
