Calligraphy and Chinese painting are the two most distinctive art categories in theChinese national culture. They have a long history of development.Although each of them has its own system in the process of development, they are inextricably linked and can interact with each other.First, they have similarities and can complement each other;second, they also have differences and can be referred to each other. The emergence, evolution and development of Chinese painting and calligraphy in the same cultural background are not only the same expression tools, but also belong to visual plastic arts. They have similarities in the use of brush and ink,the transmission of artistic conception and the expression of emotion. In the ancient theory of painting and calligraphy in China, there are many records of "painting with calligraphy" and "painting with calligraphy" and other treatises. This is because the aesthetic characteristics of calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting are similar, which makes many calligraphers and painters consciously explore the common law of calligraphy and painting from the artistic form of expression and the use of brush and ink,in order to achieve the mutual benefit of techniques. This paper takes this as a starting point to explore how the theory of "painting with books" is reflected in modern ink painting. This article is divided into five parts. At the beginning, the article explores the theoretical origin of "painting by books",combs the development context and explains its meaning. At the same time,it expounds the inevitability of the viewpoint of "painting by books".Next,it specifically discusses the manifestation of "painting by calligraphy",which mainly includes five forms: the interoperability of brush and ink,the interoperability of artistic conception of calligraphy and painting, therelevance of the layout of calligraphy and painting, the expression of Changshen theory" and the comprehensive application of calligraphy elements in paintings. Then take Zhao Zhiqian,Wu Changshuo,Qi Baishi,Huang Binhong and Pan Tianshou as examples to analyze how their works embody the idea of "painting with books" and show their inheritance relationship. Finally, this paper mainly analyses the reasons for the absence of calligraphic elements in Chinese painting, puts forward effective solutions to this phenomenon, and expounds the practical significance of "painting with books".
