In recent years,vocational education has made rapid development,especially in secondary vocational education.With the encouragement and support of the government,secondary vocational schools undertake the mission of training excellent technical talents for the country.Secondary vocational education should adapt to the requirements of socialist modernization construction,train secondary vocational students to become talents with professional knowledge and comprehensive ability.English is not only a compulsory course,but also an important subject in secondary vocational schools.As a necessary teaching tool,teaching materials have a close impact on the quality of education.The reform of English teaching materials is directly related to the success of English teaching in secondary vocational schools.The author collects a large number of relevant documents and materials,consults the“English Teaching Syllabus for Secondary Vocational Schools”(2009),and conducts an internal evaluation of the the textbook “English”(by FLTRP).Then,the author designs a questionnaire for teachers and students according to Grant's textbook evaluation table,investigates teachers and students in two schools(Chongqing Yubei Vocational Education Center and Tongjing Vocational Education Center)on the textbook and its current situation,and carries out an external evaluation of the textbook “English”.Combining internal evaluation with external evaluation,this paper tries to study the following three questions:1.Do the teaching materials meet the requirements of the “English Teaching Syllabus for Secondary Vocational Schools”(2009)?2.Do the teaching materials meet the needs of students and teachers?3.How to make better use of the FRL teaching materials?With the above three questions,the author aims to study the application of the currenttextbook English in secondary vocational schools,finds out its advantages and disadvantages,puts forward some suggestions for the compilation and use of the textbook,so as to promote English teaching in secondary vocational schools.The study finds that the English textbook(compiled by FLTRP)basically meets the requirements of the “English Teaching Syllabus for Secondary Vocational Schools”(2009)and meets the needs of teachers and students.The textbook has its own outstanding advantages.It fits the contents and requirements of the syllabus from the aspects of guiding ideology,structure,compilation,textual arrangement to language knowledge and language views,it reflects the nature and tasks of English curriculum in secondary vocational schools and help teachers and students to achieve the teaching objectives.It also basically meets the needs of teachers and students from the aspects of language knowledge,language skills,cultural awareness,methodological strategies and so on.However,there are still some shortcomings in the textbook,some things are worth improving and perfecting from the textbook itself to the process of using the textbook.Therefore,on the premise of affirming its advantages,it points out that the textbook needs further improvement.
