Historia Naturalis is wrote by Zhang Hua,a litterateur in the Western Jin Dynasty.This book includes the geography,plants,fish,insects,birds,animals and many ancient myths which are the origin of the later legends and novels.At the same time,the ancient myths also give the inspiration to designers to creative.With the development of the world,it requires the designers use a new visual angle to examine the traditional culture,inherit and innovate basing on reserving the essence of excellent traditional culture.This paper will start with the creation in mythical elements mentioned by the Historia Naturalis,analyze the mythological images described in Historia Naturalis,summarize the using of technique in myths' illustration and fuse the modern aesthetic together to create.This paper is divided into four chapters.Chapter one is the introduction,mainly talks about the background,purpose,significance and the main contents of the research.The second briefly introduces the contents of Historia Naturalis and studies the aesthetic value at first;secondly,it will analyzes myths of Historia Naturalis how to embody in the paintings and illustrations.Chapter three analyzes usages of the mythical elements in the illustration designs,which contains how to use the lines and traditional color,the reference of the ink painting style and how to use the new techniques in illustration creation.The last is practical creation.Through the extracting of the myths in Historia Naturalis,using the design techniques of modern illustration and combining the mythical elements and illustration designs together,it will form a set of theories on design.
