Most domestic and foreign empirical studies on note-taking features focus on the correlation between note-taking features in consecutive interpreting and interpreting quality or efficiency. However, evaluation on interpreting quality involves many factors, especially some subjective factors of all sorts. To reduce subjectivity of interpreting quality evaluation, the author selects interpreting fidelity, one of the most important aspects as a variable in this empirical study. The author aims to analyze features of notes taken by 9 MTI students in Chinese-to-English consecutive interpreting in the aspects of note count, note form and note-taking language, and explore the correlation between these note-taking features and interpreting fidelity. After the literature review, the author introduces research methodology, which involves research variables, participants, instruments, data collection procedures and data analysis methods.Later, quantitative and qualitative investigations on the correlation were conducted. The findings show that in terms of note count, there exists no significant correlation between note count and interpreting fidelity. In terms of note form, more students preferred to use Chinese characters and symbols and fewer English words and abbreviations in note-taking were used. And no remarkable correlation between note form and interpreting fidelity was found. In terms of note-taking language, most students preferred to use source language to take notes, and there is no significant correlation between note-taking language and interpreting fidelity.Based on the above findings, the author proposes some suggestions on note-taking teaching and learning in interpreting, and further notes that this empirical study is exploratory and that the findings need to be further verified in the future research.
