The material for the interpreting task is an investment promotion speech given by the manager of a start-up company at Money Show in 2017.The speech on Oil-water Separation and Desalination Technology belongs to the discourse of technical ones featuring a high information density..Two distinctive attributes stand out in this speech:during the speech,the speaker tends to improvise from time to time such as telling a joke and correcting himself after giving a short sentence or a few words;since it's an oral speech without written texts,the speech rate of the speaker tends to vary significantly.There are a lot of disfluency pauses occurred in the interpreter's rendition,especially when impromptu elements or high-speed juxtaposed information suddenly occurs,the main causes of which can be categorized as the following:failure in conceptual preparation,failure in encoding and generating utterances,and failure triggered by self-monitoring.Based on Gile's Effort Models,the author proposes three tactics to make the delivery smoother,which emphasizes the limited processing capacity and appropriate allocation of efforts on the part of the interpreter.Firstly,the speaker frequently uses some vivid idiomatic expressions,which cost the author more efforts to analyse their meaning.Free translation can to a certain extent alleviate the interpreter's pressure to extract the meaning during the conceptual preparation process.Secondly,due to drastic syntactic disparities between the two languages,long and complex sentences are particularly difficult to interpret thus more efforts are required.Syntactic transformation can largely enhance the efficiency of grammatical encoding process so that more efforts can be saved for production.Thirdly,while trying to deliver the target text as authentic as possible,too many efforts are spent on self-monitoring.Hence an appropriate degree of omission saves more efforts for production by streamlining self-monitoring process.This simulation project and later reflection as well as subsequent research to avoid disfluency pauses has helped the author improve interpreting skills and acquire a deeper understanding of the cognitive process and basic tactics to cope with tasks of similar features in the future.
